Paying a UPI QR code from your credit card
A RuPay credit card linked to a UPI app lets you pay any UPI QR merchant from your credit line instead of your bank balance. NPCI enables this on the RuPay network only, so Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners credit cards cannot be linked. Of the 52 India cards we track, 1 runs on RuPay.
This page is an explainer, not a reward table. Rewards on UPI spends are set per card by the issuer and revised often, so we publish a UPI earning line for a card only when the issuer's own text for that card already says one.
In a UPI app that supports your issuer, add the RuPay credit card and set a UPI PIN for it. Support varies by app and by issuer.
The same merchant QR you already use. At payment you pick the credit card as the source instead of a bank account.
The spend appears on the card statement, on the card billing cycle, with the card interest and late-payment terms attached.
Which RuPay credit cards does CardPolo track?
1 of the 91 cards in our catalog is recorded on the RuPay network. Below is that card with the benefit lines we hold, unedited.
IRCTC SBI Premier
- 10% rewards on IRCTC train ticket bookings
- 4 reward points per ₹125 on dining + groceries
- Up to 5% railway lounge access discount
- 8 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits/year
- 3.5% forex markup (offered on both Visa and RuPay networks)
The Indian market has many more RuPay credit cards than the 1 in this list. We add a card only once its fee, earning structure and network can be pointed at the issuer's own document, which makes the catalog grow slowly and makes it trustworthy at the same time. We are expanding RuPay coverage. Until then, this page will not pad itself with cards we cannot back. Browse the full catalog of 91 cards.
How do UPI rewards differ from rewards on a card swipe?
Treat UPI as its own transaction class, not as a swipe by another name. Issuers decide separately how a UPI-routed credit spend earns, and the common patterns are: the same rate as a normal spend, a reduced rate, the normal rate up to a cap, or no reward at all. Some issuers also carve out categories inside UPI, so groceries might earn while a utility or wallet top-up does not. The rule lives in your card's own terms, and it changes when the issuer revises them.
This is exactly why you will not find a per-card UPI rate table here. We hold a UPI earning line for a card only when the issuer text we already recorded for that card says one, and we print it as-is.
- “1.5% NeuCoins on UPI and other transactions”
Quoted from the benefit text we hold for each card. It is not a promise that the line still stands today, and it is not a substitute for your own card's terms.
Why do some merchants refuse RuPay credit on UPI?
Because the economics change the moment the money comes from a credit line. A UPI payment funded by a bank account costs the merchant nothing. A UPI payment funded by a credit card carries a merchant discount rate above a low-value floor, so the shop keeps less of the same bill. Merchants who built their pricing around free UPI notice, and some of them decline credit-funded payments, ask you to pay from an account, or quietly keep a separate QR for it.
The floor and the applicable rate are set by NPCI and revised from time to time, so this page deliberately quotes neither. Check NPCI's current circular if you need the exact figure. Two other refusal causes get blamed on the merchant unfairly: the acquiring bank can block whole merchant categories for credit-on-UPI, and your own issuer can exclude categories such as wallet loads or cash-like transfers, in which case the decline comes from your side of the rail, not the shop's.
Practical consequence: do not travel, shop or pay a bill on the assumption that the credit line will be accepted at a given counter. Keep a bank-funded UPI handle or a plain card as the fallback.
What should you verify before relying on RuPay credit on UPI?
Six checks, all on primary sources. Each one has bitten somebody on a forum thread.
- 1Is your exact card variant eligible?
Issuers enable linking per product, not per network. A RuPay badge on the card art does not mean your variant is enabled. The issuer’s own card page or FAQ is the source.
- 2Does your UPI app support your issuer?
App-by-issuer support is uneven and changes. Confirm in the app you actually use before you need it at a counter.
- 3What do your rewards terms say about UPI?
Look for UPI named as its own class: excluded, capped, reduced, or earning normally. The key fact statement and the rewards terms page are where this lives.
- 4Which categories are excluded?
Exclusion lists are card-specific and are the usual reason a spend earns nothing. Read the list rather than assuming your spend is in it.
- 5Does the merchant accept it?
Acceptance is decided at the counter and by the acquirer. Assume it may be declined and carry a fallback.
- 6How is the spend treated on the statement?
It is credit: billing cycle, due date, interest and late fees all apply. Some transfer-like transactions can be treated as cash-equivalent by the issuer, which changes the charges.
RuPay on UPI: common questions
›Can I link any credit card to UPI?
No. UPI credit-card linking runs on the RuPay network, so a Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Diners credit card cannot be linked no matter which UPI app you use. Of the 52 India cards in our catalog, 1 is recorded on RuPay. Eligibility is also set per card variant by the issuer, so a RuPay network badge alone does not guarantee your specific variant can be linked.
›Which RuPay credit cards does CardPolo list?
1 of our 91 cards is recorded on the RuPay network: IRCTC SBI Premier. That is thin coverage of a large market, and we say so on the page rather than padding the list.
›Do you publish a UPI reward rate for each card?
Only where the issuer's own text for that card already says something. 1 of our 91 cards carries a UPI line in the benefit list we hold, and we reproduce it word for word on this page. For every other card we say nothing about UPI earning, because a plausible-looking number would be worse than a gap.
›Why did a merchant refuse my RuPay credit card on UPI?
Paying a merchant from a bank account over UPI costs the merchant nothing. Paying from a credit line does not: above a low-value floor, a merchant discount rate applies, and that cost lands on the merchant. Small merchants who priced their business around free UPI sometimes decline credit-linked payments or ask you to pay from an account instead. Some merchant categories are also blocked by the acquirer rather than by the shop.
›Are the card figures on this page verified?
Not yet. None of the 1 RuPay card listed here carries a verified-against-issuer date, and the page says so next to its figures rather than in a footnote. Where we hold the issuer document, it is linked so you can check it yourself.
›Where do I check my own card’s UPI rules?
Your issuer's key fact statement or most important terms and conditions document for that exact card variant, plus the rewards terms page. Those are the documents that say whether UPI spends earn at the normal rate, at a reduced rate, up to a cap, or not at all, and which merchant categories are excluded. A general article, including this one, cannot answer it for your card.
