Amex India improves Membership Rewards transfers: Virgin Atlantic up 60%, Hilton Honors up 67% from August 18, 2026

American Express India rerated two Membership Rewards transfer partners on August 18, 2026. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club moves from 2:1 to 5:4, and Hilton Honors from 1:0.9 to 1:1.5. Both are permanent rate changes, not a limited-time transfer bonus.

Almost everything on this page moves in one direction. This one does not. On August 18, 2026 American Express India improved the rate at which Membership Rewards points convert into two transfer partners, and both moves are permanent rate changes rather than a limited-window transfer bonus.

The new ratios

PartnerOld ratioNew ratio1,000 MR points now buyChange
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club2:15:4800 Virgin Points (was 500)+60%
Hilton Honors1:0.91:1.51,500 Hilton Points (was 900)+66.7%

For scale: 100,000 Membership Rewards points used to convert into 90,000 Hilton Honors points. The same balance now converts into 150,000.

Why the Hilton line is the bigger story

Marriott Bonvoy transfers from Amex India Membership Rewards at a flat 1:1. At the new 1:1.5 rate, Hilton hands over more raw hotel points per Membership Rewards point than Marriott does.

That does not automatically make Hilton the better redemption, because a Hilton point and a Bonvoy point are not worth the same thing, and Hilton award pricing is fully dynamic. It does mean the default assumption that Bonvoy is the obvious hotel outlet for Indian Membership Rewards balances is no longer safe. Price the actual stay in both currencies before you transfer.

Virgin Atlantic is the sharper tool

Virgin Points are useful well beyond Virgin Atlantic's own flights, because the program books partner awards. Going from 2:1 to 5:4 changes the arithmetic on every one of those redemptions by 60% in one step, without any award chart changing.

Read this next to what left in July

This rerating follows the removal of Etihad Guest as an Amex India Membership Rewards transfer partner on July 1, 2026. Taken together, the transfer menu got shorter and then two of the remaining doors got wider. That is the honest summary; it is not a straight upgrade year.

The standing rule does not change: transferable points are only worth what the receiving program says on the day you transfer, and a transfer is one-way. Move points when you have an award held, not because a ratio looks good.

What to do

If you have been sitting on Membership Rewards points waiting for a reason, the reason is that two of your exit routes just got materially better and the rest did not. Reprice any Hilton or Virgin redemption you had written off at the old rate.

Work out what your points are actually worth by redemption route before you commit a balance.
