Is a premium credit card worth it in India? The fee and waiver math (2026)
A premium card earns back its fee through rewards, a fee waiver or perks you would pay for anyway. The break-even math, the lounge fine print that changed in 2026, and every premium card in our catalog side by side.
In this article
Short answer: a premium credit card is worth it when what you actually get back, in rewards you redeem plus perks you would otherwise pay for, is larger than the fee you actually pay. For most people that comes down to one question: will you spend enough to get the fee waived?
Every figure in the table below is read from our catalog. Rows we have not yet checked against the issuer are marked, and the card page links to the issuer's own document.

The break-even math
Start with the fee you will really pay:
- If your yearly spend clears the waiver threshold, the fee is effectively zero from year two.
- If it does not, the full fee plus 18% GST is your cost.
Then turn the waiver threshold into a monthly number. Divide it by 12. A card waived at ₹10,00,000 a year needs about ₹83,334 a month on the card. A card waived at ₹4,00,000 needs about ₹33,334 a month. If that is more than you put on cards today, plan on paying the fee.
Finally, count the return honestly:
- Rewards, valued at what you will actually redeem them for, not the best possible transfer.
- Perks you would pay for anyway, such as lounge visits on trips you already take.
- Nothing for perks you will not use. A golf benefit is worth zero if you do not play golf.
If rewards plus used perks beat the fee you will pay, the card is worth it for you.
Lounge access got harder in 2026
Lounge visits are the perk most people buy a premium card for, and several issuers tightened them this year:
- HDFC put Regalia Gold's domestic lounge access behind a quarterly spend gate.
- IndusInd now asks for quarterly spend before it unlocks domestic lounge visits.
If lounges are your reason for the card, read its current lounge terms first. Our lounge hub quotes each card's own wording.
Income gates decide the shortlist
Most cards above carry a high stated income requirement, and some are invite-only or tied to a banking relationship. Start with the cards you can actually get. The table's income column shows what each issuer states, where we have it.
Premium does not always mean better rewards
A high fee buys perks and redemption options. It does not guarantee a better reward rate on your spending. A mid-tier card with a strong rate in your biggest category can out-earn a premium card for many people. Run your own spend through Polo Match or My Cards to see the net value, fee included.
