United drops flight-count status in 2027 and raises Premier 1K to 32,000 PQP
From 1 January 2027, United MileagePlus Premier status is earned on Premier Qualifying Points alone. The flights-plus-points path ends, 1K rises from 28,000 to 32,000 PQP, and the United co-brand cards become a bigger part of how status gets earned.
United announced on 13 October 2026 that, starting with the 2027 qualification year, MileagePlus Premier status will be earned on Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) only. Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF), the segment count that let frequent short-haul flyers qualify on fewer points, stop counting from 1 January 2027. AwardWallet, Upgraded Points and One Mile at a Time all report the same thresholds.
The new thresholds
| Tier | 2026: flights + points | 2026: points only | 2027: points only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premier Silver | 15 PQF + 5,000 PQP | 6,000 PQP | 6,000 PQP |
| Premier Gold | 30 PQF + 10,000 PQP | 12,000 PQP | 12,000 PQP |
| Premier Platinum | 45 PQF + 15,000 PQP | 18,000 PQP | 18,000 PQP |
| Premier 1K | 60 PQF + 22,000 PQP | 28,000 PQP | 32,000 PQP |
You still need at least four flights on United or United Express in the year to qualify for any tier; partner flights do not count toward that minimum.
Who actually loses
- Points-only qualifiers at Silver, Gold and Platinum: nothing changes.
- Points-only 1K qualifiers: you need 4,000 more PQP, about 14% more.
- Anyone who qualified on the flights-plus-points path: this is the real cut. A 1K member who got there on 60 flights and 22,000 PQP now needs 32,000 PQP, roughly 10,000 more, about 45% more. Lower tiers lose their cheaper route the same way: a Silver who qualified on 15 flights and 5,000 PQP now needs the full 6,000.
Where the credit cards come in
With flights out of the formula, card spend matters more. AwardWallet and Upgraded Points give the same 2027 card earning for primary cardmembers:
| Card | PQP earned on spend | Annual PQP cap |
|---|---|---|
| United Explorer | 1 PQP per $20 | 1,000 |
| United Quest | 1 PQP per $20 | 18,000 |
| United Club and Club Business | 1 PQP per $15 | 32,000 (raised from 28,000) |
The Club cards' cap rises to match the new 1K threshold, which means a Club cardholder can, in principle, reach 1K on spend alone, at $480,000 a year. The Explorer's cap is small: it tops out at 1,000 PQP, so it nudges a status run rather than carrying one.
Cardholders who already hold Premier status also get a starter deposit of PQP worth 5% of their tier's requirement, based on status as of 1 February 2027, with the card open by 31 December 2026: 300 at Silver, 600 at Gold and 900 at Platinum. The sources disagree on the 1K figure, so we do not state one.
What to do
- If you qualify through lots of short flights, price your 2027 status in PQP now; the cheap path ends on 1 January.
- If you hold the United Explorer mainly for status, recognise that its 1,000 PQP cap is a small share of even Silver. Judge it on its travel benefits and earn rate, not on status.
- Check whether a flexible-points card would serve you better than a co-brand. Put your actual spend through CardPolo's card matcher, or see where flexible points can go on the transfer partners matrix.
